The Nussbaum Family

 

In 1800 Manes Nussbaum and his wife Marianne moved to Hammelburg. Manes was born on August 19, 1771 in Burghaun nearby Fulda. Marianne was born on May 5, 1779 in Willmars. In 1811 Manes Nussbaum belonged to those 24 Jewish men, who got the right to live in Hammelburg.

 

 

Manes and Marianne

had three sons and four daughters:

 

Samuel (February 20, 1801)  Israel (November 18, 1804)  Hirsch (May 1, 1817)

Fayel (June 2, 1807)  Regina (February 8, 1809)  Minnah (September 26, 1815)  Babette (April 8, 1819)

 

 

 

 

Since 1800 the Nussbaum family lived in the old city of Hammelburg.

Manes Nussbaum was a cloth merchant. His three sons settled down in Hammelburg:

 

Samuel Nussbaum (1801 - 1885)

Israel Nussbaum (1804 - 1881)

Hirsch Nussbaum (1817 - 1887)

Samuel Nussbaum and his wife Carolina Bamberger (Heidingsfeld) had the following daughters: Fannij (* 1830), Elise (* 1832), Babette (* 1834) and Clara (* 1836). Clara married Emanuel Stern and settled down in Hammelburg, Marktplatz 8. Fanni, first daughter of Samuel, married Heinrich Katz, born in 1821 in Hammelburg.

Israel Nussbaum and his wife Theresia Rosenberg (Unsleben) had the following children: Seligmann (* + 1827), Fannij (* 1829), Isaias (* + 1830), Pauline (* 1831), Philippine (* + 1834), Löw Leopold (* 1835) and Simon (* + 1838). Löw Leopold Nussbaum settled down in Hammelburg. His son was Ferdinand Nussbaum.

Hirsch Nussbaum and his wife Sophie Frank (Arnstein, Würzburg) had the following children: Louise (* July 29, 1843 + August 19, 1843), Selig Sigmund (December 11, 1844), Adolph (July 11, 1846), Simon (October 4, 1848) Lena (June 13, 1851) and Fanny ( May 6, 1853). Sigmund, Adolph and Simon Nussbaum settled down in Hammelburg.

They lived in Hammelburg on Winzergasse 6 (old Number 278)

On April 25, 1854 a terrible firestorm destroyed the old city of Hammelburg.

The Nussbaum families lost their houses.

Manes and Marianne Nussbaum moved to Willmars and Veitshöchheim,

where they passed away:

Marianne Nussbaum on May 22, 1854 in Willmars,

Manes Nussbaum on March 20, 1857 in Veitshöchheim.

The youngest daughter of Manes was married there.

 

 

Hirsch Herrmann Nussbaum passed away on January 10, 1887.

His wife Sophie Frank died on July 14, 1888.

 

 


The descandants of Samuel, Israel and Hirsch Nussbaum

lived in Hammelburg with their families:


 

 

Leopold Löb (Löw) Nussbaum (*1835), son of Israel Nussbaum, with his wife Carolina Baum, Kissinger Straße 17; their children were Moritz (*1865) Theresia (*1866)  Ida (*1868) Mathilde (*1869) Ferdinand (*1870) Clara and Max (* 1873) and Hilda (*1875). Clara, married Kallman, was murdered in the Holocaust.

 

Sigmund Nussbaum (*1844), son of Hirsch Nussbaum, with his wife Regina Bergen (Gelnhausen), Marktplatz 10; their children were: Martha (* March 21, 1873) Rosa Maria (* May 10, 1874) Martell Ernst Max (* October 8, 1875) and Melanie (* November 11, 1880). Rosa, married Rotschild, was murdered in the Holocaust.

 

Adolph Nussbaum (*1846), son of Hirsch Nussbaum, with his wife Clara Berliner (Westheim/Hammelburg), Marktplatz 10 and Bahnhofstraße 3; their children were: Martell (* March 14, 1877) and Manfred (* November 27,1883).

 

Simon Nussbaum (*1848), son of Hirsch Nussbaum, with his wife Pauline Sichel (Veitshöchheim, sister of Samuel Sichel), Kissinger Straße 3 - 5; their children were Markus (*1878) Rosa (*1880) Meta (*1883) Carl (*1885) and Hermann (*1891). Hermann was murdered in the Holocaust.

 

 

The children and grandchildren of Leopold, Sigmund, Adolph and Simon Nussbaum were persecuted in the Nazi time, because they were Jews. They must sell cheap their houses, their stores and all possessions. They must leave their town, where they lived. They must go away with a suitcase in the hand:

Sigmund Nussbaum passed away on January 21, 1912.

The house was sold to Ludwig Göbel.

On August 1912 Sigmund´s wife Regina and his daughter Melanie

with her husband Adolf Meyer moved to Aschaffenburg.

In December 1913 Melanie and Adolf Meyer went to Ludwigshafen.

Regina Nussbaum moved to Reydt ( Mönchengladbach)

and  passed away there  in 1928.

On July 29, 1903  Melanie Nussbaum, daugther of Sigmund,

was married to Adolf Meyer.

Manfred Nussbaum, born in 1883 in Hammelburg,

second son of Adolph and Clara Nussbaum, studied orchestral music.

Manfred married Claire Friedmann and moved to Stuttgart.

In 1939 the Nussbaum Family - Manfred and Claire Nussbaum with their children Charlotte and Ernest -

escaped from Stuttgart to New York.

 

 

 

In August 2014 Charlotte Isler and her son Donald visited Stuttgart and Hammelburg,

the hometown of Charlottes father Manfred Nussbaum.

He escaped with his family in 1939 to New York.

 

 

 

Manfred Nussbaum passed away on May 24, 1965 (New Yersey).

His wife Claire followed him on March 21, 1973.
